Nisha had big plans for Saturday night — the annual dance competition. Her friends had been preparing for weeks, each participant carefully chosen to perfect the sequence. The hype was on for the sold-out show.
Moments before the performance, Nisha was frantically called backstage to help with costume and makeup for a late arrival. Without hesitation, she stepped in and worked her magic.
Nisha then hurried back to the auditorium, her heels tapping against the empty hallways. Minutes later, the performance unfolded with a few acrobatic moves, Nisha couldn’t help but speculate how Sean ended up with that black eye.

I started writing drabbles on Medium earlier this year, and they’ve proven to be a fun way to maintain consistency with my daily writing goals. It’s a challenge to keep the story limited to 100 words without losing the integrity of the message.
Today’s prompt was “sequence,” which immediately reminded me of the short clips my son showed me on his phone. He recently tried out for a dance team, and they performed live last weekend. The show was sold out, so I had to watch it live on YouTube from home. The team was fantastic, showcasing the long hours and persistence they put in over the weeks.
However, when I saw my son do a flip over the girls and groove on top of the pyramid, I couldn’t help but wonder about his eye injury. A few days ago, I received a frantic call from him and his roommate, asking if anything could be done about his red, swollen eye. Apparently, he was watching a football game and decided to follow his friend into a backflip on a bean bag after a touchdown. Unfortunately, the bean bag slid away, and down went my son’s face onto the dusty hardwood dorm floor.
After watching the dance competition, I texted to congratulate him and the team on their marvelous performance, but I also added…
“I think we know how you actually got that black eye!”
