Journal Often

Sameera, June 17, 2026June 17, 2026

I have always remembered things better through words and writing them down, whether it was a stranger’s name, school notes, to-do lists, or random thoughts. Everything had to be written somewhere. Looking back, it only makes sense that I became a journal keeper.

“Dear Diary” was my very first best friend.

As I grew older, daily diary entries began to feel too vulnerable. I worried about being judged if someone read them, so I shifted toward abstract poetry and creative writing. The Dear Diary style faded away, but writing never did. It remained one of my most valued personal assets.

If I wasn’t journaling, I was writing letters to family and friends back home. Writing helped me stay connected, reflect, and process life. Naturally, I carried that habit into adulthood.

As an adult, however, I became more concerned with presentation. Everything needed to look organized and polished, much like a perfectly arranged living room after the toddlers had gone to nap. Eventually, that pursuit of perfection became overwhelming. I abandoned spiral notebooks, experimented with Rocketbook, embraced digital note-taking, and eventually discovered blogging.

For years, I reserved blogging for life lessons and personal reflections.

Then, in November 2024, someone shared a journaling practice that completely changed my perspective. He told me he writes down everything: conversations, observations, random thoughts, and interactions. During meetings, he not only takes notes but records the essence of what people say, their attitudes, and what he can learn from them as individuals.

I was fascinated by the idea that you can learn something from anyone and everyone.

Inspired, I began carrying hardbound mini notebooks. Over the last 18 months, I have filled and rotated through 10 to 13 notebooks, of which one is my current journal, while two were reserved for doodles and random sketches.

Writing gives me clarity.

Today, my journals contain a little bit of everything:

  • Reflections on the day
  • Lessons learned
  • Gratitude entries
  • Goals and ambitions
  • Emotions and feelings
  • Notes from daily interactions
  • Communication reflections and improvements
  • Habit tracking
  • Reviews and self-assessments
  • Income and budgeting notes
  • Quotes and inspirations
  • Bucket list ideas
  • Weekly schedules and appointments
  • Project plans
  • Art inspiration
  • Wish lists
  • The vision for Chaotic Sanity
  • Journal prompts
  • Social media posts that caught my attention
  • Photography, writing, and art challenges
  • Side hustle ideas
  • Career and job opportunities
  • Notes from books and podcasts
  • Miniature painting sketches
  • Records of completed artwork
  • Social media growth observations

Yes, journals take up shelf space.

Some might even call them clutter.

But I have learned so much from them.

Today, those thirteen notebooks have become a treasure trove of ideas for social media posts, blog articles, artwork, and personal growth. Returning to pen and paper has taught me that I retain information better when I write it by hand. I also appreciate having access to my thoughts without needing an internet connection or a charged device.

Instead of becoming frustrated while typing notes into my phone at a doctor’s office or while waiting in line, I simply pull out a notebook and a colorful pen.

Whether you prefer a notebook, digital journal, planner, or note-taking app, the format matters less than the habit itself.

Journal entries become a record of our thoughts, experiences, goals, lessons, and growth. They help us capture moments that might otherwise be forgotten and reveal patterns we might never notice otherwise.

Most importantly, they help us understand ourselves.

And that may be the most valuable record of all.
