Prioritizing What Matters

Sameera, January 18, 2025

It’s hard to follow through on what your heart desires, especially when life throws a curveball. Have you ever started something but didn’t follow through? When I think deeply about it, I realize I’ve rarely seen any project through to completion. Whenever house errands, parents’ illness, kids’ homework, or social commitments arise, the first thing to take a back seat is my hobbies.

I’ve always told myself that I can’t work when I’m frustrated or stressed, so I hush my heart and promise myself a better time. But that “better time” never seems to come. If it’s not one thing, it’s another, and before I know it, days pass without a hint of creativity. Resentment builds up, and I’m left feeling empty and drained.

In truth, I’m not stealing anyone’s time or commitment, so why do I feel so guilty for stepping away from others’ work and prioritizing my hobbies? Sometimes, I wish I could disconnect entirely — ignore social commitments, toss my gadgets aside, and just be present, sitting on the couch with a blank calendar. Maybe then, the importance of my creative outlets would become clear — not just to me but to those around me.

Last night, I had a moment of doubt so strong that I considered giving it all up: my LLC, my blog, my writing platform, and my social media. I’ve been staying home, being available for my family, yet I’ve questioned whether that’s enough to justify spending time and money on my passions. But I didn’t give up. Something stopped me — a spark of determination, perhaps.

Going forward, I’ve decided to reflect deeply on my connection with each aspect of my life — whether creative or not. What truly matters? What can I let go of without regret? I’ll journal these reflections and transform them into stories, uncovering which core pieces, relationships, and bonds are essential to me.

This journey isn’t about eliminating everything or making drastic changes overnight. It’s about finding clarity — a clearer picture of my purpose, my role in this world, and, most importantly, my place at home. Let’s see where this path takes me. I hope it leads to a life that feels whole, balanced, and deeply fulfilling.
