A long time ago, I wrote about the importance of hobbies in our lives. Over the years, that belief has only grown stronger. Hobbies are more than just pastimes—they are sanctuaries for mental health. Whether you’re working a demanding 9-to-5, running your own business, or managing a household as a stay-at-home parent, it’s vital to pursue something that stirs your creativity and rejuvenates your soul.

One of the most significant investments I made in myself was back in 2019, when I bought a laser cutter for my birthday. It opened up a whole new world of vinyl crafting for me, and I poured myself into countless projects. My husband, knowing my pattern of diving into new hobbies with enthusiasm, feared that this, too, might be a fleeting interest. Maybe, in part, to prove him wrong, I held on to it longer than I otherwise might have. But in the process, I realized something important—I didn’t just love starting new hobbies; I loved the act of creating.

My collection of tools and gadgets reflects this ongoing curiosity. From a sticker machine to an engraver, a rotary tool to jewelry-making kits, wood-burning tools, and stacks of cardstock paper, each item tells a story of an artistic experiment, a new skill explored, a fleeting inspiration turned tangible. Some projects faded with time, but others lingered, growing into a lasting passion.
Lately, what I crave most is the return to writing and sketching. Writing offers me an escape, a space where I can step into different shoes without fear of judgment. It allows me to express thoughts that might otherwise stay tangled in my mind. Sketching, on the other hand, is my hands’ way of exploring—whether it’s shading with pencil, blending with charcoal, brushing soft strokes with watercolor pens, or doodling with ink. Each form brings a different kind of peace, a pause from the daily rush. And unlike mindless scrolling through social media, at the end of a doodling session, I have something real in my hands—something I created, something that exists beyond the screen.

In the past year or two, I’ve also embraced another creative outlet—videography. My Insta360 has been a companion in capturing life’s moments, turning them into immersive videos. I’ve always loved taking pictures with my iPhone, but now I’m working on printing them with my Ivy printer and turning them into refrigerator magnets. There’s something deeply satisfying about holding a tangible memory in my hands—something more lasting than just another load of dishes washed or another basket of laundry folded.

As National Hobby Month unfolds, I invite you to revisit an old hobby or explore a new one. Whether it’s writing, painting, crafting, photography, or something entirely unexpected, let it be a reminder that creativity isn’t just a luxury—it’s a necessity for the soul.

What hobby has been calling you lately?
