“Just spread your wings and fly,” they say
“Only till society allows it”, I say.

You can’t cage her at home
“Let her fly”, they say
.
Let her flutter her wings
“She will find her own sky”, they say
.
When she said all the right words and nodded at your ways
“What a good girl she is”, they say
.
Dare not, she walks away from the straight path sketched for her
“What a defiant girl she is”, they say
.
She painted the canvas in all the beautiful hues
“How creative she is”, they say
.
She followed a trending niche and spoke her mind
“Why is she so outspoken”, they say
.
She climbed the steps to the corporate world
“How ambitious she is” they say
.
She sculpted the words and advocated for a platform
“What a rebel, she is”, they say
.
When you had no car, and she walked every step of the way with you
“She is perfect in all the ways”, they say
.
The exhausted caterpillar now wants to wiggle out of the cocoon
“Let her flutter over the flowers for a bit”, I say

Are you truly able to express yourself freely?
Are we able to speak our minds, write whatever we want, express in all the ways we desire? We are secretly governed by a social norm and we can only voice our thoughts till it is “socially acceptable”.
“Just spread your wings, and fly.”
Although we can be whoever we want to be, our choices and decisions reflect not only who we are but also people around us. We are only supported and cheered when we advocate for something that is socially acceptable; however, when we start contradicting the majority, not only are we shunned, but people around us too – till they are forced to hush or disassociate with you.
The key is to master a way to express your mind in ways that can be socially digested without clipping any wings.
